DESCRIPTION (Adapted from applicant's abstract): This is a conference grant requesting support for the 1997 GRCC. This meeting will be held July 20-25, 1997, at the Proctor Academy, Andover, New Hampshire. The Chair will be Dr. Nancy Zahniser and the Vice-Chair will be Dr. Marie-Francoise Chesselet. Other members of the Organizing Committee include Dr. Gary S. Aston-Jones, Dr. Marc G. Caron, Dr. Dona M. Chikaraishi, Dr. Ian Creese, Dr. Barry J. Hoffer, Dr. Beth J. Hoffman, Dr. Robert B. Innis, Dr. Denise Jackson, Dr. Lee Limbird, Dr. Dennison A. Smith, and Dr. Michael J. Zigmond. The emphasis will be on discussion of cutting-edge, unpublished research in the catecholamine field and will include sessions with two or three speakers and a discussant, poster sessions preceded by "poster bullet" presentations (most participants will be expected to present a poster), roundtable discussion groups, and a plenary lecture by Dr. Limbird. The meeting will be small (approximately 125 participants); however, the Organizing Committee will strive to insure that a diverse group of both junior and senior investigators attends. At least one speaker in each session will be a junior investigator. Students and postdoctoral fellows will be encouraged to attend. Therefore, the conference will serve both a scientific and training function. Sessions will focus on "Transcriptional Regulation of Catecholamine Genes", "Transporters: Novel Properties and Regulation", "Extrastriatal Dopamine Systems and Movement Disorders", "Receptors, Kinases and Channels", "Drug Addiction, Mental Illness and Anesthesia: New Insights", "Central Noradrenergic Systems", "Transgenics, Knockouts, and Behavior", "Development, Aging, and Plasticity", and "Peripheral Noradrenergic Systems: Heart Failure". A Student/Postdoc Career Opportunities" Workshop, chaired by Dr. Zigmond and Dr. Smith will be an important new addition to the program. The financial support requested will be used to increase the number of women and minorities participating in this meeting.
