The project will look at the opportunity to use Broadband Powerline Communications (BPC)and new ballast technology to introduce innovative smart electronics and networking tomanage, monitor and control street lights in real time from a centrally located managementfacility. Development of a broadband powerline infrastructure overlaid on the street lightingelectricity network enables operators to realise multiple benefits: Intelligent monitor, control,advanced maintenance and energy management of street lights and street light resources;Significant reduction of energy costs and carbon emissions; Re-use of the existing electricitynetwork asset; The addition of value added services such as wireless hotspots, CCTV andelectric vehicle charging. Innovation is achieved by introducing real time communication andmanagement, smart software at the lighting column and integrated electonic systems utilisinglatest semiconductor and nano-technology. Proof of the market feasibility would have apotentially significant impact on reducing electricity consumption, costs and emissions in alloutdoor lighting environments including street lighting, city centres and car parks insupermarkets, airports, sporting venues, conference centres, hotels etc. The deliverable willbe a market feasibility report, presentation and a demonstration system.
