Wind Technologies has developed a newly configured and patented induction motortechnology for use in industrial variable speed drive (VSD) applications. It offers substantialreductions, projected as high as 20%, in the system capital costs as compared to conventionalVSD technologies by utilising a fractional-size converter. It hence enables a far greaterproportion of motor applications to benefit from the energy efficiency and improvedenvironmental impact of VSDs. The core technology has been progressively developed up toa working and tested 250 kW size by the Company for use as a generator for wind powerapplications, but it can also be utilised as an electrical motor in VSDs.The aim of the project is to study, assess and prove the market opportunity for a new andpatented electrical machine technology, the Brushless Doubly-Fed Motor (BDFM), for VSDapplications. The proposed Proof of Market project will enable us to assess the potentials ofthe technology as a low-cost solution for VSD applications by studying the market needs,potentials and trends, technology fit and economics, and compatibility with energy efficiencylegislations, which will set the foundation for commercialisation operations to move to thenext phase.
