Crystallisation has traditionally been operated as a batch process, but problems withconsistent product specification arise e.g. size distribution, correct polymorphic form &morphology. Consequently it has been identified that continuous flow crystallisation canimprove manufacture and offer several benefits including energy and capital cost savings;leading to many flow reactors being sold for laboratory use. However due to the vulnerabilityof crystallisation, its implementation at an industrial scale has been restricted. Autichem havenoted this gap in the market and have devised a continuous plug flow reactor that combinesCSTR and tubular technology to improve heat transfer and mixing control.
