Transport regulation requires collection of road traffic data of major roads. Also computerized transport models require road traffic data for tackling congestion, improving safety and reducing pollution. Road traffic delays in Europe and USA is increasing at rate of 10-20 %, also to reduce carbon emission levels by 130 g/Km European governments are putting more emphasis on advanced traffic management systems which require richer traffic data. The need is for automatic traffic count tools which can collect data at lower cost and which is easy to setup and is preferably non-invasive. Transport engineers and planners are looking at new technologies and tools for automatic collection of Road Traffic Data. It is an emerging industry and the existing tools are limited by the technology that is available. We have developed novel algorithm at University of Manchester which can produce richer data than existing tools, it is easy to setup hence location-adaptable. In this project we plan to develop a basic prototype of a product to automate traffic counting. It will implement and extend the algorithm already developed and demonstrate real-world performance of the product to users and investors.
