Design of a Radio-Frequency Identification Smart Card Reader (RFID Reader) to fit into theFlipPad. The reader will be powered by an external battery that will communicate with theiPad via the USB/Charging connector.The FlipPad is a rugged iPad case made from medical grade, FDA approved, plastic suitablefor use in a healthcare infection control environment. It can be sprayed with harsh infectioncontrol sprays and uses an antimicrobial glass screen. The RFID reader will, for the first time,allow clinicians to have integrated access from an iPad direct to Electronic Patient Records(EPR) systems.Predominantly this is a hardware project to solve an existing problem. Healthcare ChiefInformation Officers (CIO) need to leverage of their existing investment in smart cards byopening up RFID access on Apple iPad tablets.In the UK 800,000 NHS Smart Cards have been issued and they are converting to RFID.Hospitals in the USA and Europe are following a similar path. Our project is to fit a RFIDcard reader inside the back case of the FlipPad and make it programmable. This will make itattractive to healthcare sites using different smart card standards, such as in France and theUSA.The RFID reader software will be updated via the Trust Appstore, an enterprise level platformthat will be customised for each hospital. The Trust Appstore will also manage medical Appson each iPad authorised for use within the hospital. The programmable software on the RFIDreader will be tested at our Pilot Site, Bartshealth NHS Trust.
