This project will seek to prove the technical feasibility and design concepts of the ‘Shell’interface platform for mobile computing devices (MCDs). Through the Seaboard GRAND,ROLI has proved a market need for high resolution, high bandwidth human computerinterfaces that make use of our industry-leading design approach and technology. MCDs haveincreased in processing speed and efficiency with every release, but their touch inputinterfaces have not matched this pace of innovation, which is significant because the interfacedefines our lived interaction experience with them. As MCDs now make up an increasinglylarge percentage of our computing time, the potential benefits of a breakthrough in this areaare growing larger and becoming more important. However, innovation has stifled since thematuration of capacitive touch screens. Although an unprecedented challenge of engineeringand design, increasing the affordance of MCDs can make users’ lives more comfortable,productive and expressive, and this is what ROLI wants to achieve with the Shell platform.We seek to further push the boundaries of our SEA Interface technology and adapt it forMCDs, which will require a number of innovations to be successful, in order to satisfy theformal constraints and cost requirements of mobile computing. The results of this work couldhave a profound impact on this UK company, but also the mobile computing industryglobally.
