This project aims to complete a revolutionary new instrument, Hector-1 to be installed on the Anglo-Australian Telescope. Hector-1 builds on the highly successful SAMI instrument with new, larger, 3-D spectroscopic-imaging optical fibre bundles and the highest resolution spectrographs of any instrument of its type in the world. Hector-1 will enable the largest ever survey of nearby galaxies in 3-D. The Hector-1 data will be able to trace the kinematics of gas and stars as well as mapping ionisation mechanisms across 15,000 galaxies. Major breakthroughs are expected in understanding how the environment affects how galaxies evolve to have the broad-ranging physical properties seen in the local Universe.
