Gas monitoring is essential in many aspects of the energy supply chain. These include purity determination of hydrocarbons during extraction, verifying purification steps, monitoring for process control and the study of emissions.Laser based instruments used for gas monitoring have a number of benefits such as a low cost of operation, fast measurement rates, low detection limits and a resistance to cross interference. As a consequence, laser based gas monitoring provides a viable alternative to more common approaches, such as gas chromatography.For multispecies monitoring using laser based instruments, complex and higher cost multiple laser instruments are often required. By reducing the pressure within the sample measurement cell it is possible to simultaneously measure multiple gas species with only a single laser. This increase in functionality with a reduction in the complexity and cost of the instrument is expected to result in increased sales and new market opportunities.The aim is to develop a pressure control system which will integrate into existing gas monitoring instrumentation to reduce and maintain a target pressure within the gas sample measurement cell.
