DESCRIPTION (Investigator's Abstract): The long-term objective of this SBIR proposal is to develop a new interferometric laryngoscope for research and clinical application. Spatially-resolved speckle interferograms of the superior surface of the vocal folds obtained during phonation will provide for real time analysis of vocal fold dynamics to assist in the early detection of mass lesions, to improve diagnostic precision, and to provide a means by which treatment efficacy may be assessed. Phase I will involve the assembly of a prototype device to demonstrate feasibility, while Phase II will be directed toward the commercial application and marketing of the instrument to hospitals, medical research centers, and physicians in private practice.
