The W2H2 project, entitled "From marine litter/biomass to clean hydrogen: an integration of co-hydrothermal gasification and membrane technologies", aims to train a talented researcher, Dr. Abdul Raheem, through an interdisciplinary research and training programme, that will (1) develop processes for the (a)marine litter/(b)biomass-to-hydrogen production by an integration of co-hydrothermal gasification and membrane technologies, and (2) evaluate the economic feasibility, environmental impact and social impact of such processes. The project will lead to the continuity of Dr. Raheem's academic career after his PhD and establish an excellent foundation for his future independent research career. Hydrogen production from waste materials can be a solution for providing both a clean fuel and a sustainable waste management method and contribute to a zero-carbon future. However, the challenges lie in whether the processes are economic feasible, sustainable, and socially acceptable. A combination of hydrothermal gasification and membrane technologies could be a potential answer for the challenges. In W2H2, the Fellow, with pre-existing experience in biomass thermal conversion, especially in the hydrogen production from the gasification of algal, will receive an intensive technical training by a multidisciplinary team. The supervisory team consists of experts on thermal conversion of biomass and plastics, host Dr. Jiawei Wang (Aston University (AU), UK) and Dr. Chunfei Wu (Queen's University Belfast (QUB), UK), experts on membrane technologies, Dr. Zhentao Wu (AU) and Dr. Francisco Garcia-Garcia (University of Edinburgh (UoE), UK), an expert on economic and business analysis, Dr. Luciano Batista (Aston Business School, AU), and an expert on policy analysis, Dr. Jerneja Penca (Euro-Mediterranean University (EMUNI), Slovenia). The success of the W2H2 project will lead to scientific and technological advances in the sustainability conversion of marine litter and marine biomass.
