英文摘要
JazzDias traces the transnational influence of postwar American crime films in terms of their musical aspects, examining their cultural impact on British and European (French, Polish, Italian) cinemas-and these cinemas' influence on Hollywood in turn. The project explores how the urban crime genre is assimilated and reimagined in terms of modern jazz's potential to signify primal impulses gendered as "masculine" violence and "feminine" sexuality. After accumulating evidence available in film archives within the UK and Europe, the ER shall apply an interdisciplinary theoretical apparatus to this specific global media-manufacture of racial prejudice spanning well beyond the United States. Through an ambitious programme of dissemination, JazzDias will raise academic and popular awareness of crime-jazz "diasporas" emanating from the globalized distribution of Hollywood mainstream product, as well as "counter diasporas" of foreign art house films in the USA. And it will provide a more nuanced understanding of American and overseas audiences' cultural ambivalence toward these films in ways both universal and idiosyncratic.
