The need for trusted research environments (TREs) is clear. Personal or sensitive datawhich have been collected for operational, commercial or governmental reasons need to bemanaged securely and safely for research use in an environment that encourages bestpractices. TREs are designed to enable only authorised projects and researchers accessto sensitive data whilst minimising risk of data release or exposure. Influential reports fromHDR UK and DARE together with the UK Government Goldacre review and “Data SavesLives” policy paper all have highlighted the need for change in how sensitive/personaldata are handled.SATRE will compare openly available UK TREs hosting health, manufacturing, commercial, science and humanities data and bring them into alignment of a standardised reference TREarchitecture. The development teams at HIC and ATI, fully supported by their infrastructurepartners, will lead the reference alignment in collaboration with a consortium of highereducation, charity and industry organisations. The reference architecture and its implementation will be informed and strengthened bya programme of community building and engagement with the DARE-sanctionedworking group, stakeholders and an extensive public representation. SATRE outputs will bean informed reference TRE technical specification, a collection of educational media anddetailed reports; all supporting DARE’s aim of a national research data infrastructure.
