Mitochondrial redox metabolism is central to the life and death of the cell. Consequently, a better understanding of its nature during health and disease will lead to new insights into how mitochondrial dysfunction underlies pathology and facilitate the development of novel therapies. The Mitochondrial Dysfunction group focusses on understanding how mitochondrial metabolism and function combine in physiological and pathological contexts to alter redox responses such as reactive oxygen species (ROS) and metabolite levels. These changes are then sensed and interpreted by the rest of the cell, in some cases as signals and in others as drivers of pathology. An important facet of our work is the development of novel chemical biology probes and bioactive molecules to report on and manipulate mitochondrial function in living organisms. We also leverage our knowledge of mitochondrial dysfunction to develop new drug targets and therapies.
