CONFERENCE--NEW DIRECTIONS IN DOWN SYNDROME RESEARCH

The New Directions in Down Syndrome Research Conference will be held in Toronto, Canada, under the auspices of the National Down Syndrome Society (United States) and the Down Syndrome Research Foundation (Canada). The conference will be convened under the direction of the NDSS Science Advisory Board, in collaboration with an Organizing Committee, consisting of prominent Canadian researchers. The two-day conference will review and document the current status of Down syndrome-specific research in the five areas of Genetics; Psychobiology; Health Care; Aging and Alzheimer's Disease; and Mental Health. It will also review current knowledge about applying research findings to clinical practice, in order to help individuals with Down syndrome reach their full potential. New directions in Down syndrome research will also be explored. Plenary sessions will cover a variety of topics, including: an overview of genetic research; mapping and sequencing of the 21st chromosome; bio-ethical issues; psycho-social issues; speech, language and cognition; basic research; and bridging the gap between basic and applied research. Plenary speakers and some presenters will be selected by invitation. A call for papers will generate additional topics and speakers. There will also be poster sessions for scientists to present their work, particularly focused on younger investigators. The meeting will provide the opportunity for participants from the United States, Canada and around the globe, to interact with colleagues, synthesize and share knowledge, develop new collaborations, and generate ideas about practical applications. This conference will help to facilitate progress in research and practice on Down syndrome.
