Cardiff has been leading the largest survey carried out with the Herschel SpaceObservatory, the Herschel ATLAS, which has discovered approximately half-a-milliondusty galaxies. The relatively poor angular resolution of Herschel has meant that wehave been able to identify at optical wavelengths the galaxies associated with theHerschel sources only at redshifts less than 0.5. Approximately 2/3 of the Herschelsources are at high redshifts out to z >>5.Most of the Herschel sources will also be radio sources and a new radio surveycarried out with the Low-Frequency Radio Survey (LOFAR) in the Netherlands willallow us to produce much more accurate positions for the Herschel sources. Thestudent will combine the Herschel and radio datasets and carry out an investigationof galaxy evolution out to z=5.
