英文摘要
The PhD will look into several important optical components required for a telecommunication network and researching how to create these components for varying SDM fibre types.This reviews the current progress made during the first eight months of the PhD. It first reviews the different SDM fibre types and SDM components, along with the current research progress. After which, the creation and experimental results of both a single-mode and two-mode fibre isolator are explored, with the former showing a good isolation of 46.86 dB with an insertion loss of 0.34 dB, but the latter showing signsof mode dependent loss (_ 2:5 dB) and high crosstalk between the modes. The device performance is very sensitive to the alignment of two-mode fjbre isolator assembly and so further practice is required to achieve better results. A two-mode fibre Variable Optical Attenuator (VOA) is also created with the attenuation between the two modes slightly different due to the different mode field diameters. Finally, the current and future plan for the PhD is shown.
