Jet-engine reheat systems are prone to thermoacoustic oscillations which can grow in intensity and bring a risk of structural damage. Avoiding such oscillations is essential in practical systems but can lead to performance limitations. Improved understanding of the physical mechanisms behind thermoacoustic oscillations is necessary in order to inform the design of improved reheat systems.This PhD project aims to tackle the problem by using high-fidelity 3D CFD including Large Eddy Simulation together with advanced turbulent combustion modelling. This will allow the geometrical features of real reheat systems to be taken into account, and allow also for proper treatment of the complex thermochemistry of the flame and the flow field.
