The Stuff of Night Mayors: Governance and the Evening Night Time Economy

This proposed study sets out to explore the governance ofthe urban night through the Night Mayor schemes ofAmsterdam and London. It will investigate thesepreviously unstudied modes of governance to interrogatetheir effect on the everyday life of 'night people' and thepolitical economy in both locations. The project seeks toincorporate both research surrounding the evening-nighttime economy (ENTE) and its various modes ofgovernance as well as using this as a lens to analyse therelationship between the ENTE and the alcohol industriespotential harm. By drawing on literature surrounding theproduction of nightlife, its governance and the emotionalgeographies bound up with drinking practices, thisresearch will collaborate with alcohol charity BalanceNorth East to develop a blueprint for best practice acrossBritish Cities and their ENTE's. Situating itself within aframework of political economy and its intersection witheveryday life, this project will use Hadfield's four modes ofnocturnal governance to frame the research: Law, Statuteand Urban Design; Police Governance; PrivateGovernance; and Affect and Informal Governance. Thisproject will adopt predominantly qualitative methods, toproduce subjective and rich data essential for elucidatinginformation tied up with lived experiences. Data will becollected in three stages including focus groups, eliteinterviews, volunteered geographic information and timelapse photography taking place. With Night Mayorschemes newly launched and spreading internationally,this research is perfectly placed to provide real relevanceto policy on a local and national scale.
