In the 1824 systematized division of France into theatrical arrondisements, towns deprived of a resident theatre company were visited by travelling troupes performing a range of repetoire from opera and vaudeville. This project will consider the aesthetic and institutional practices of these troupes as windows onto larger cultural and social questions surrounding entertainment from 1824 until the deregulation of theatres (1864). I will explore questions about the adaptation of musical repetoire to locall conditions; tensions between high and low art forms; movement of performers through France; the agency of female performers and managers, and vice versa.
