MSc Research for ID plus Mphil/PhD -Research Project: Transformation of the Tanzanian Working Class: From Ujamaa to Neoliberalism

The MSc Component:During the MSc I have undertaken various modules which relate to the project and provide the academic grounding for undertaking this research project. This has meant training in both qualitative and quantitative research methods, as well as, studying area-specific modules. The final part of the MSc is writing a dissertation on a related topic to the PhD research which simultaneously advances my understanding of the topic and allows me to create relevant connections with individuals who are instrumental to the PhD phase.First year of the PhD:The first year of the PhD is largely concerned with developing an advanced literature review and mapping out both the theoretical background of the research and the specific writings on Tanzania. Based on the survey of literature, I will narrow down (if necessary) the research question and write an upgrade paper. I will also start preparations for fieldwork during this period. I will also apply for a difficult language training grant from UBEL DTP, in order to have language practice in Tanzania - whether I will be able to get this will influence the specific timeline of the PhD.The second year of the PhD:My activities during the second year will be structured around fieldwork which is currently estimated to take 8 months. The fieldwork is expected to take place at the start of the second year (depending on language training) and will take place in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The fieldwork is based on three types of activities: 1) Semi-structured interviews (which in practice means that there will be some mobility on my behalf); 2) Archival research (The archives are in Dar); 3) Media survey (Most probably also based on archives). The eight month period spent in Dar es Salaam will be continuous but also includes the possibility of (short) external collaborations which might be outside of Dar. The last part of the second year will be based in London and I will deal with data analysis.The third year of the PhD:In the final year I will focus on an intensive write-up, make any adjustments needed and improve the thesis based on feedback.
