Linking the solar chromosphere and corona: IRIS and AIA/SDO observations of dynamic events

This project will develop methods to automatically detect and categorize bright dynamic events in IRIS observations of the solar chromosphere (the lower atmosphere), and to seek statistical relationships with changes in the corona (the higher atmosphere) observed by AIA/SDO. Connecting these atmospheric layers is a critical step towards understanding the processes that heat the solar corona to over a million degrees. This project will also incorporate ground-based measurements made by telescopes such as the Swedish Solar Telescope (SST).
