The research accounts for the relative stability of the Franco dictatorship in the last decade of the regime, by demonstrating how it generated widespread consent among large sectors of the Spanish population. By focusing on the everyday life of ordinary citizens, the dissertation will explore whether the dictatorship's longevity was due to the creation of high levels of acquiescence, rather than open popular support or sheer violence against opponents. The research will dissect late Francoism's parallel strategies of trumpeting economic prosperity and of fostering a culture of political apathy to create a demobilised population which, ultimately, never challenged the dictatorship.
