This project aims to explore the use of 52Mn and 51Mn PET imaging to quantify biodistribution of smart MRI contrast agents. A range of known and novel chelate ligands will be utilised to bind to manganese centres, ideally stabilising the Mn2+ oxidation state for maximum relaxivity and MR contrast. Knowledge of the action and location of smart MR contrast agents is crucial for early disease detection and diagnosis, alongside cell tracking. Subsequent PET labelling of the agents allows an understanding of whether a change of signal is due to a change of relaxivity of the contrast agent, or a change in the amount of contrast agent present.The project falls squarely within the remit of the CDT, namely by developing novel tools to investigate and image important biomedical phenomena, as well as providing comprehensive chemistry, biology, MR imaging and radiochemistry training.
