Why Did You Leave the Horse Alone?: A practice-based exploration of the influence of material culture on the construction of contemporary shared beliefs and collective memory.Doctoral study at Northumbria University will enable me to work on an ambitious research project under the guidance of my ideal team of supervisors. I want to study with Professor Christine Borland due to her compelling cross-disciplinary practice and subject specialization in World War 1. Borland's ability to traverse difficult cultural topics and ethical sensitivities, and her work within museum collections make her my ideal primary supervisory for this doctoral project. As secondary supervisor, Katherine Baxter is an ideal subject specialist in post-colonial studies and has parallel interests in the colonial inheritances of WW1 in the Middle East. We have worked together in Jordan and she has professional relationships established with British Institute in Amman (CBRL) and Jordan Museum. Professor Donna Chambers at University of Sunderland is available to be my external advisor, as her expertise in postcolonial studies and decolonising methodologies will be crucial to navigating my doctoral project. Doctoral study with Northumbria University would allow me access to studio space, digital editing suites and filming equipment for studio work. I am interested in additional training in Modern Arabic, facilitation and anthropological techniques, and training in postcolonial studies as I am not a specialist in this field. I am interested in securing a placement with the Middle East branch of the NZ Defence Force or a diplomatic agency in the region - any placements to be confirmed via my supervisors' networks. Fieldwork costs include: two one-month trips to Jordan (workshops, performance of the oud, research with the Jordan Museum); a two-month trip to New Zealand (workshops, research with Te Papa Museum).
