Central to the development of optical, optoelectronic and bioelectronic devices based on organic materials is the availability of efficient synthetic molecular and polymeric photoswitches. Desirable features of photoswitches are photochromism, whereby the switches exist reversibly in two stable states with different electronic or optical properties. Therefore light can be used to control the macroscopic optical or electronic properties of the materials into which the switches are incorporated. One of the most important design criteria in molecular photoswitches rapid response times. This proposal will develop a new generation of photoswitches with ultra-fast switching times.
