The project aims to provide analysis of independent film exhibition in Leeds, exploring changing exhibition practices and film audiences in the city. The main focus of the study will be independent film exhibition over the last forty years. Looking closely at the period that surrounds Leeds International Film Festival (LIFF) it will trace film culture in the years preceding its establishment and during its thirty two years of existence. As well as a close study of LIFF's history and operations, LIFF will be used as lens through which to explore the wider film culture of Leeds, from radical screening collectives, to art-house cinemas, to community film clubs and DIY exhibitors, and the cross-fertilisation of exhibition practices and influences.
