'Reclaiming the City' utilising Street Art: An analysis of the functions of street art as an agent of social change in South American cities.

While it is evident that the act of street art in South American cities is often interlinked with social movements and can be seen as an act of resistance in its own right, the extent of its ability to promote change or generate support for ideas is unclear. Whereas many view the act as solely aesthetical change, it is unknown whether it achieves something greater. With support for viewing street art as a means of protest established, it is interesting to assess its validity as an agent for change in comparison to more traditional forms of protest. Change in this respect can be looked at in a variety of ways, in line with the scope of traditional social movement theory. It is thus important to analyse how far street art goes in this sense, looking at it from both the point of view of the artist, the viewer and society in general. In particular I would be interested in identifying typologies of street art in relation to their impact on collective identity and their effectiveness in promoting change
