Turcos y Portugueses: An oral history of 'national' identity, regionalism and Football in Galicia

Since the restoration of Spanish democracy in 1977, regionalism and regional identity have been central to the country's politics. Recent events in Catalonia, as well as growing separatist demands in other European countries, highlight the importance of understanding autonomist and separatist movements, and the identities that underpin them. This oral history project examines Galician 'national' identity through the lens of football. As a point of entry I shall use my established relationship with the Federación de Peñas of Deportivo La Coruña, through which I can access a large body of potential interviewees. This I shall supplement with archival research in the Xunta de Galicia state archives and club archives, and through the Galician press. This research is a natural extension of my Masters dissertation, which investigates Galician identity through the experiences of Deportivo La Coruña and Celta Vigo. In preparing for this dissertation I have become aware of the need for rigorous methodology in the collation of oral histories. To date, I have focused on the urban experience. Doctoral research will explore oral histories from a wider geographic and demographic pool, creating a more nuanced picture of galeguismo (Galicianism) and asking how far it is articulated, ritualised, and identified with partisan support of local football. My research focuses on two sets of questions. First, did rivalry between Vigo and A Coruña impede a sense of united Galician identity, and how far did such rivalry transcend sport to reflect older civic tensions? Second, how do footballing allegiances interact with Galician-Spanish dual identities, and how far do they also exaggerate resentment and unease with other regions?
