The world leading pulsed muon source, ISIS, uses spin-polarized beams of pulsed positively charged muons to study magnetic properties of new materials. Negatively charged muons have very different properties when implanted in matter and this project will explore a new approach for studying samples using these particles. Since negative muons stop close to atomic nuclei, their sites are well defined and the signal from light atoms such as oxygen is very long-lived. This provides a new route to detecting magnetic fields in highly symmetrical sites inside complex magnets.This project falls under the EPSRC Quantum devices components and systems theme.
