This project is an observational study of luminous submillimetre-selected galaxies (SMGs), which typically reside at redshift ~1-4 and are undergoing immense bursts of star formation. These extreme systems provide challenging tests of galaxy formation and evolution theories and they may be a key phase in the formation of the most massive local galaxies. The focus of the work will be on measuring the environments and internal chemistry of SMGs to determine their likely evolution.
