英文摘要
A key performance parameter for a modern, low emission, gas turbine combustion system is the ability to generate a uniform and well atomised spray. However, sprays are complex droplet laden multiphase flows in which multiple parameters can influence a variety of break-up mechanisms. This makes it particularly challenging in terms of being able to understand which non-dimensional performance parameters are conserved between the engine, Intermediate pressure facilities and bespoke spray test facilities that are commonly used to develop modern, low emission, fuel injectors. As a consequence, injector development often relies on the use of expensive and time-consuming high Technology Readiness Level (TRL) facilities. A key objective of this work is to identify what are the key processes that determine the spray distribution generated by modern, low emission injectors and how this links to the reacting flow performance of the combustion system. The intention is then to provide a novel strategy by which the relevant physical process can be suitably scaled and captured in simplified facilities operating at more benign conditions which are also amenable to high quality measurements. This will be undertaken using a variety of experimental and data analysis techniques. In this way cost effective measurements on low TRL facilities can be used for the rapid development of low emission gas turbine fuel injectors which are capable of providing the required operability characteristics.
