For the development of future fusion reactors, a refractory metal (ie. tungsten) has to be joined to a structural material such as steel. The research conducted in collaboration focuses on finding alloys suitable for brazing tungsten to steel and evaluating their performance with various experiments which, when possible are complemented with finite element simulations. Since material research in nuclear fusion requires the development and testing of small specimen for measurement of material performance after irradiation, understanding the impact and differences of changing specimen size is also of interest. Current experimental procedures for measuring creep-crack growth in nuclear steels are also being experimented upon to assess whether they are suitable for measuring the same properties in miniature samples and composite miniature samples.
