We will develop characterisation methods for signatures of damage and failure of aeroengine parts. We will apply state of the art electron microscopy characterisation to measure deformation and relate dislocation structures to crack paths and operational history. This will be performed in partnership with colleagues within Rolls-Royce plc and the University of Oxford as part of a fundamentals of failure investigations project group.
