Kataphasis and Apophasis in the Theology of John of the Cross

During the Renaissance, the Spanish poet and mystic John of the Cross wrote about rising beyond senses, knowledge, words, and thought, and approaching God in a dazzling darkness. John used a dialogue: "saying" and "unsaying" theological statements to ascend towards God; an ancient technique with contemporary relevance which aims to resolve the paradox of a God who can never truly be comprehended, but who is said to be understood. My research will show how John used this technique, and how he used and adapted medieval mystical traditions, demonstrating his place in the intense mystical debates of the Catholic/Counter Reformations.
