Aqui mando yo: Negotiating Narratives of Caribbean Heteronormativity in Contemporary Reggaeton Music Video

Exploring a previously neglected area in Caribbean cultural studies, this project examines contemporary reggaetoner@s' enactment of resistance to heteronormative narratives rooted in the region's colonial past. By applying a systemic functional lens to music videos of reggaeton artists in and/or from Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, it simultaneously invest igates the visual and musical strategies they take in order to navigate local, diasporic and international markets in an age of global capitalism. Ultimately, it breaks with existing scholarship to argue that audiovisual expression in reggaeton music video creates a space for intervention in hegemonic ideologies of Caribbean otherness.
