Styles of Immanence/Immanent Style: John Ruskin's Notebooks, 1840-1890

My research will consider the significance of Ruskin's diaries and working notebooks as objects of literary study in theirown right, as well as examining the ways in which they interact with - and frequently resist claims of straightforwardinfluence upon - his published material. Of especial interest will be the notebooks Ruskin used to record his geologicaland botanical impressions, with a view to illuminating his conceptions of natural value and secular, ecologicalimmanence (a topic I have begun to explore as part of my MPhil studies). An holistic, object-led approach to theseworkbooks as spaces of internal, productive dialogism will underpin my research, with an emphasis on detailed closereading; JH Newman's dictum that style is 'a thinking out into language' will inform the elements of this study dedicated totracing Ruskin's more inchoate styles in his research notes and personal diaries. Fundamentally, my work aims toovercome a significant lacuna in Ruskin studies and, therefore, Victorian studies in general; that is, the almost totalabsence of scholarly work devoted to these notebooks as discrete objects of analysis. The beginnings of acomprehensive study of the Ruskin notebooks will, I believe, provide a fresh critical perspective on the literary style andnatural philosophy of one of the most influential figures of the English nineteenth century.
