The project will investigate the properties of nuclei that lie far from theline of maximum beta stability. The student will work towardsestablishing an experimental research programme using the ISOLDESolenoidal Spectrometer (ISS), which was constructed as part of theSTFC-funded ISOL-SRS project and is currently in the final phases ofcommissioning at CERN. The ISS experiments will use post-acceleratedbeams of radioactive ions provided by HIE-ISOLDE to bombarddeuterated targets. The ISS will measure the energies of light ionsproduced in transfer and inelastic scattering reactions in order toprobe the properties of the states that are populated in the exoticnuclei. The student will actively participate in the experimentalprogramme with the ISS and it is intended that the student will analysedata from an ISS experiment as part of their thesis. The student willalso have opportunities to participate in experiments at other nuclearphysics facilities in order to broaden their experience. While the dataanalysis and interpretation will be primarily performed at Liverpool,the experimental work will be conducted at international acceleratorlaboratories and exploit state-of-the-art spectrometer systems. Aspart of their training and research on this project, the student wouldbenefit from a Long Term Attachment at an accelerator laboratory.
