Textures of Blackness in the Midlands: Excavating Regional Archives of Black Culture and Politics

This project aims to deconstruct, disrupt, and redefine our understanding of archival, community, and knowledge production in relation to the preservation of Black voices in the Midlands. Working with the Stephen Lawrence Research Centre and Serendipity, the project aims to make inquiries into how Black public and private lives have been constructed, excavated and preserved through certain kinds of archival practices in particular sites of memory. This research will involve collecting, mapping, and analysing the imprints of both long-standing community persons and young people including Black women and girls, and will entail an analysis of archival practices through the lens of postcolonialism andnotions of the 'colonial' archive.
