The Missing Assembly: Democracy and the Limits of Liberalism

My research project will examine why undemocratic constitutional orders in the United Kingdom and the United States have survived long after both political cultures embraced the ideal of democracy. Alongside this, my research will also examine the legal and technical means by which democratisation might now take place. The thesis will combine these two elements - theoretical and practical - in an attempt to test the insights and assumptions of some of the canonical thinkers of political theory, in particular Hobbes, Harrington, and Madison, against the evidence of contemporary experience.
