Personality, Institution, and Pastoral Reform: An investigation into the registers of the Archbishops of York in the years 1266-1296

The concept of 'cura animarum' (care of souls) is often seen as the fixed aim of pastoral reform from the Fourth Lateran Council in 1215 onwards, and as a universal programme. This thesis explores pastoral reform as both vision and activity, as so embodied by individual leaders and enacted via the networks and institutions of their regional church. They were subject to personality, experience, and leadership styles. My research will open up the York archbishops' registers of Giffard, Wickwane and Romeyn, to examine the ways in which person, agenda, and relationships were mapped onto and gave form to the institution of the Church.
