The top-quark is the heaviest fundamental particle observed to date. It plays a crucial role in many beyond the Standard Model theories and hence precision measurements of the top-quark are essential to probe the limits of the Standard Model. The large dataset provided by the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) to the ATLAS experiment allows to measure rare processes such as top-quark pair production in association with either the Z boson (ttZ) or the Higgs boson (ttH). Measuring these processes will test whether the couplings between the top-quark and the gauge bosons agrees with the Standard Model of particle physics. The aim of this project is use the data collected by the ATLAS experiment to make detailed measurements of the ttZ and ttH processes. The student will apply novel unfolding techniques to the large ATLAS datasets to measure the differential cross-section of the processes, which will then be able to be used to probe beyond the Standard Model theories. The project is aligned with STFCs goal for "World Class Research" and fits within the STFC theme for data-intensive science. The research will be done in collaboration with other members of the ATLAS collaboration.
