英文摘要
The field of landscape architecture (LA) is often described as progressive when considering the rolewomen played in the inception and development of the profession, with some even describing it as'emancipatory'2. Although this has been anecdotally understood for many years, it is only recentlythat there has been a trend towards examining the role of women in the profession. This has largelytaken the form of historical biography with a spotlight being shone on the lives and work of a fewremarkable women. And yet, as Shenker3 and Riley4 both show, this approach can only take us sofar. There is a growing awareness of the need to shift our intellectual enquiry towards a moremultiplicitous framework of women in the history of LA that takes into account social, political andideological agendas5. This research proposal would seek to go someway toward addressing this gapand in so doing, breathe new life and understanding into the discipline. This not only has thepotential to change our view on history and the industry's place within Britain's larger historicalnarrative, but it could also inform current institutional structures, ideologies and practices too.
