This project will create a cultural biography of Garsington Manor, from 1915-1918, and ask how it was significant in the cultural formation of Modernism. I will begin by examining archival material, including the British Library's Lady Ottoline Morrell Papers, McMaster University's Bertrand Russell papers, Harry Ransom Centre's Ottoline Morrell Collection and the University of Nottingham's D.H. Lawrence Collection and Newcastle and Portland Papers, to create a timeline of the guests, events and conversations that took place at Garsington.I will set this archival research within a critical frame that draws upon Raymond Williams' theories, including 'structures of feeling' which 'indicate certain common characteristics in a group of writers but also of others in a particular historical situation' (Williams, 1971), to explore the social and cultural construction of modernism, emerging out of the experiences of the inhabitants of a particular place (Garsington) and time (WWI) in connection with the literary texts that they created. Williams' theories encourage, 'by varying forms of analysis, to go beyond the particular and isolated product - 'the text' -to its real process - its most active and specific formation' and address both the difficulty, 'both history and sociology are uneasy with them', and importance, 'as a general and social fact', of studying cultural groups (Williams, 1971, 1980). Therefore, by using Williams' theories, I will be able to draw Garsington life-writing and key modernist texts into connection and dialogue to argue for a new understanding of how the experiences felt there, both personally and collectively, led to the emergence of modernism a snot only a literary style but also a cultural formation. This project builds upon my academic experience and continued interest in the initial creation of English literary modernism which I demonstrated in my BA dissertation (First-class) on the influence of Impressionism on Virginia Woolf's first highly modernist novel, Jacob's Room, and my MA dissertation(Distinction) which examined biographical evidence and Lawrence's initial construction of a modernist style in The Rainbow together to provide a foundation for a new analysis of his transition into modernism. My Masters was funded by the D.H. Lawrence Research Centre which allowed me the opportunity for further study of modernism through my editorial role of the D.H. Lawrence Society Newsletter and contributions to the research centre. Finally, whilst working for the university, I undertook a secondment within their archives which provided me with experience in how to best research and use archival material.
