In Pursuit of "the Nabocuff": Editorial Interventions and Involution in the Non-fiction of Vladimir Nabokov

This project will rescue Nabokov's non-fiction from the margins of his oeuvre and overturn the prevailing assumption that only his fiction is worthy of our attention. Embedded within a close reading of Nabokov's transnational archives, this interdisciplinary project will pair the author's editorial interventions and refusal to speak "off the Nabocuff" with questions of involution, autofiction, and auto/biography. Starting with Strong Opinions (1973) and Think, Write, Speak(2019), this research will resist the attention paid canonically to Nabokov's fiction and offer a model for prioritising the non-fiction of mid-century American writers.
