"This is a PhD research project in Mechanical Engineering. The aim of this project is toimprove the fundamental understanding of laser-powder bed interactions during the powder bed fusion(PBF) process for the additive manufacture (3D printing) of metals. This improved understanding will informprocess optimization and effectiveness (in terms of quality and productivity). The project will build on ourexisting image and modelling experience. It will explore areas such as: the influence of the laser plume onabsorption, defocus and pointing stability of the laser beam in order to increase process stability; alternativelaser beam profiles (spatial and temporal) to reduce heat input and spatter; and sub-atmospheric andhyperbaric atmospheres to explore new processing regimes."
