The aim of this project is to study the technological innovation necessary for commercially viable fusion. This will build on an existing technology roadmap and focus on the transition from technology development to manufacturing. Key issues will include cost reduction pathways as the technology moves from development to manufacture and on to mass manufacture suitable for rapid roll out of modular fusion systems.Electricity generation is only part of the global energy system. Fossil fuels currently dominate transport and domestic heating and their replacement is vital if we are to meet climate change targets. Co-generation (hydrogen, process heat, domestic heating, propulsion) will need to be considered. The scale and nature, and hence the economics, of reactors and the balance of plant will depend on the application.
