Include a word count. Objectives and MethodologyThis study will investigate the origins of literary criticism in the works of Maurice Blanchot and Samuel Beckett. The search for these origins will take place at four moments in which Blanchot and Beckett published works circa key historical events: the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, the independence of Algeria and the Oran massacre in 1962, the theatrical premiere of Waiting for Godot in Paris, 1953, and Beckett's flight to Roussillon as he hid from the Nazis in 1942. Each of these moments will demonstrate that the origins of literary criticism are revolution, violence, waiting, and dispersal. In a reversal of scholarly convention, this study will proceed backwards from 1989 to 1942.
