EXCEEDTHE SPACE PROVIDED. To reduce the enormous public and personal costs of diabetes and endocrine disorders, there must be a new generation] )fclinical investigators, rigorously trained in clinical research and epidemiology of diabetes and endocrine disorders. He propose a training program that begins with a fullyear of coursework followedby a mentored research experience. The overall goal istotrain fellows interested in diabetes and endocrinology in the disciplines of clinical research and :pidemiology, preparing them for a productive academic career. At JohnsHopkins, the Division of Endocrinology an( aetabolism and the Welch Center for Prevention, Epidemiology and Clinical Research, have faculty with broad xofessional expertise and experience in mentoring. While there is a steady flow of oustanding fellows in mdocrinologyand atthe Welch Center, there is no support forthe training envisioned by this proposai We propose to idmit two post-doctoral and one pre-doctoral fellowsper year, to a steady state of 4 post-doc and 3 pre-doctoral 3ositions.Physician fellows will be drawn from Endocrinology and Internal Medicine. Having completed their first, Ainical year, they wiH startthetraining grant program with an intensive didactic year, usually aspart of the establishel GraduateTraining Program in Clinical Investigation, a K-30 supported program offeringa masters orPhD degree. Pre-doctoral trainees will startwith their intensive doctoral degree coursework. All fellowswill thenjoin one of 17 facultymentors to pursue original research, while continuing 3 course credits per term of didactic course work, They will be part of an active intellectual research environment that includes a full set of relevant conferences, journal club: and visiting lecturers. Fellows will havethe benefit of outstanding clinical research facilitiesavailableat Johns Hopkii includingthe General ClinicalResearch Center, other clinical research facilities, state-of-the-art computing and bioinformaticsfacilities, and the broad resources of the School of Public Health. Implementation ofthe training program will be overseen by an Executive Committeethat choosesfellowstojoin the program, and a Mentorship Committeethat oversees the mentor-mentee assignments. The faculty, facilities, and traditions of Johns Hopkins Universityare prepared toproceed with this much needed mission.
