This Project is an EPSRC iCASE studentship between the School of Engineering at the University of Liverpool and the National Nuclear Laboratory. The project is primarily experimental and involves using Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV) to measure fluid flow in complex geometries in order to inform the development of predictive CFD models. The focus of the project is twofold: (1) investigating so-called Couette-Poiseuille flow using a square duct rig at The University of Liverpool with a special interest in the laminar to turbulent transitional flow. In this flow, pressure driven flow in a square duct is combined with a moving wall component, an experimental rig for which has been constructed at the University of Liverpool. This is a flow that has not before been experimentally observed, only numerically analysed, so this research has the prospect of increasing understanding of fundamental flow phenomena. (2) Alongside this, the flow field within NNL's new fuel assembly test section, Project FAITH, which is situated in the Centre for Innovative Decommissioning (CINDe) at NNL Workington is probed. In this rig, LDV techniques have been used to measure flow velocities in fully-turbulent flow.
